About Decorative Slate Painting

Hand painted still life with apple, orange, lemon, pear, and grapes

My decorative painted slates are exclusively from Maine structures built during the 16th and 17th Centuries. According to several historic preservation sources, many slates during this time period were originally shipped from North Wales, UK.

Each roof slate is unique in character, thickness, size, and texture.  Original roof slates were manufactured by hand following a five step process: cutting, sculpting, splitting, trimming, and hole punching.

Hand painted with fruit and wine decor I hand select each slate and thoroughly clean and prepare them to meet my quality standards and become ready to paint. The antiquated and unique surface makes an ideal canvas for my signs and decorative seasonal themes. Each slate is hand painted and signed by the artist.
